I used to looovvvveeee hot chocolate when I was a kid. Actually, I still do to this day.
But my preferences have changed a lot. When I was a kid I used to love Nestle’s Hot Chocolate. A quick squirt in your milk and you were on your way.
But when I was a kid, I didn’t read ingredient labels, and now I know — my parents didn’t either! We just grabbed what we liked and ate whatever was put in front of us.
Times sure have changed though. With food allergies, obesity, autism and cancer on the rise, it’s time we start paying more attention to what we put in our bodies day after day, meal after meal.
Did you even know the main ingredient in Nestle’s Hot Cocoa is sugar?
And using deductive reasoning, since it is not labeled organic nor is it labeled non-gmo, it is most likely genetically modified and sprayed with carcinogenic pesticides! But we don’t have to label that here in America (even though over 60 other countries have banned and/or require labeling of GMO’s).
GMO’s are foods who have had their genetic makeup altered in a laboratory! And then they sell them to us without labeling them as such. We are literally eating science experiments, or maybe we are the science experiment itself? Either way, it means that Nestle’s Hot Cocoa is mostly made up of genetically modified sugar, genetically modified corn syrup solids, and partially hydrogenated vegetable oil! Those are the three main ingredients! Can someone say Yuckkk??
Well, of course we think it tastes good — it IS primarily sugar! Do you know what sugar does to your brain? A 2012 study on rats, conducted by researchers at UCLA, found that a diet high in fructose (that’s just another word for sugar) hinders learning and memory by literally slowing down the brain! That’s after it hijacks reward pathways and releases tons of dopamine. And that’s just scratching the surface.

Blows my mind to this day how they can get away with this! I think it’s because people are so addicted to the sugar that many of them are willing to look the other way. They don’t realize the extent that it is affecting them and don’t realize how much they could benefit from swapping out a few ingredients.
But not me! I just can’t. I have seen firsthand how food affects us, and especially our young children. And I say “No More!”

These days I like to indulge myself in foods that are a little more sophisticated and A LOT MORE nutritious! And I’ve found that in doing so, and in selecting better ingredients, the finished products actually taste a lot better, and leave me feeling much more satisfied too. After all, we’re not competing with much! I mean, just look at Nestle’s ingredient list above, and then look at mine:
